step 3: let your nails be a reminder
psalm 23:6 is so beautiful because it is a sweet reminder that no matter the circumstance, we know the Lord's goodness and mercy chases us down. this is not stating that our lives should be easy, more comfortable, or without trials. in fact, just a few verses earlier david talks about walking through the valley of the shadow of death. this verse is a reminder that we have an eternal hope, a secure anchor for our hearts. and it reminds us that because we have been made right with God, we get to be called His friend.
when we remember that Jesus has defeated death, we have been forgiven, set free, invited to spend all of eternity with Him, our hearts fill with hope and faith.
in genesis 25:29-34, there's a wild story of twin brothers (esau and jacob). the story is a powerful example of what it looks like when we forget to dwell with the Lord and remember His goodness and mercy towards us.
the first born of the twins was esau, he became a skilled hunter. jacob, the younger brother, was a quiet guy who preferred to stay home. esau was busy doing what he does (hunting) but he became so busy that he forgot to eat. esau finally became starving and decided to give away his birthright so that he would be fulfilled in the moment. despising his sonship, he was left empty.
it's important that we don't become so busy doing what is good that we forget to eat (read the Word) and dwell with Him.
david later says in psalm 27:4 "the one thing I ask of the Lord, the thing I seek most is; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life; delighting in the Lord's perfections and meditating in his Temple."
let this be your reminder to that you are so loved and that the Lord is your good shepherd. and that as you dwell in Him, you will find everything you need.
