Life can leave us feeling worn out and burdened, but we have an incredible invitation from Jesus “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28.
Now I have to tell you about sheep and Psalm 23 because it’s really cool!
So Psalm 23:1-2 says “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” Well, fun fact about sheep… Sheep can literally eat ALL DAY. They eat more than they sleep. Lying down in a green pasture implies the sheep must be fully satisfied. In other words, we are fully satisfied with God. We always have more than enough.
Then Psalm 23 says, “He leads me beside still waters.” It’s common for sheep to get carried away in a rushing stream or river current. That’s why shepherds have the rounded hook at the top of their staff, to pull the sheep back when they get carried away by the water. When a shepherd leads the sheep to still waters. The sheep are at a peaceful place where they can drink until they are fully refreshed.
This passage of scripture is saying… The Lord is my shepherd. I need nothing. I can lay down in green pastures and still waters. I can rest in His presence. He is a good shepherd. Our true rest is found in Jesus. When we come to Him, we can lay down our worries and receive His peace. Isn’t that good? Isn’t God so good?
Take a moment, to breathe and rest with Jesus. You are so loved.
